Staff Report
With recommendations from the Sul Ross community, the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library has added new titles to the Flipster collection of online magazines as of January, 2020.
“Flipster makes it easy to read magazines on a computer, smartphone or other internet-enabled device,” said Betsy Evans, Education and Outreach Librarian.
Evans said while Flipster has been a part of the library’s virtual offerings for over a year, January’s new title additions fill some subject area gaps and speak to the diversity of the Sul Ross community.
New titles include: Archaeology, The Baffler, Catster, Eating Well, Gay Times, Metalsmith, Texas Gardener, and The Land Report.
Newest issues regularly rotate on the library’s homepage, https://library.sulross.edu/. From there, the full list of Flipster titles can be browsed.
The Flipster platform is free to Sul Ross students, faculty and staff.
“Users can start by navigating to the library’s website from a desktop computer or downloading the Flipster app from your device and log in with your LoboID and Password when prompted,” Evans said. “Using the Flipster app enables you to explore all available titles, pick favorites and download multiple issues to your own personal library for off-line reading.”
Last year, the library added Bon Appetit by request of Fine Arts and Communication professor Avram Dumitrescu. “Flipster is such a great service the library provides,” he said.
“I hope every Sul Ross student experiences it at least once. I have been able to browse a large range of magazines and their archives from my computer and tablet for research for presentations as well as for fun,” he said.
Dumitrescu isn’t the only faculty member making use of the app.
Dr. Alicia Trotman of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department said that having access to The Psychologist “provides our students with a European perspective of psychology offering breadth to the discipline seemingly for its inception in German laboratories beginning with Wilhelm Wundt.”
She added that the magazine showcases psychological practices as universal which augments student knowledge and invites them to explore other magazines in Flipster.
