      • Categories News
      • Date September 18, 2019

by Travis Hendryx, Office of Public Relations

A full slate of activities is scheduled for the weekend of September 27-29 as Sul Ross State University celebrates Family Day, 2019.

“We look forward to having the families of our students in Alpine for this special weekend,” said Kara O’Shaughnessy, Director of Advancement and Donor Relations.

“To help folks find their way around the campus and community, we will have a hospitatlity table inside the Morgan University Center lobby with refreshments and the latest schedule information.”

O’Shaughnessy also encouraged visitors to stop by the bookstore, located in the University Center, for Sul Ross apparel, gift items, books and a variety of snacks and drinks.

“We want this to be an open house experience for the families,” O’Shaughnessy said. “This is an opportunity for parents to meet with their student’s roommates, tour the residence halls, enjoy a hike to The Desk, visit the Museum of the Big Bend and other places on campus.”

Parents are also invited to sit in on classes with their students.

“If space is available, parents are welcome to sit in the back of the classroom and observe,” said O’Shaughnessy adding that some classses may not be open due to exams.

In addition to home football and soccer games scheduled for September 28, the 74th Annual Sul Ross NIRA Rodeo is set for September 26-28.

Other activities include a Basketball Golf Scramble at the Alpine Country Club benefitting the Sul Ross women’s and men’s basketball programs. The golf outing gets underway at 10:00 a.m. on September 28.

On September 29, families will be treated to a Sunday brunch with Sul Ross President Bill Kibler at 11:00 a.m. in the Morgan University Center.

9:00am – 5:00pm Exhibits in the Museum of the Big Bend.

“Before Texas was TEXAS Map Exhibit” TEXAS. A word that today is known around the world, describing a place which conjures up many different images in the mind’s eye. A place which is often larger than life, both as to the landscapes and those who inhabit it. Our state was not always called TEXAS—we do not know, for example, if the original Texans who called this land home had a name for it prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Early trans-Atlantic explorers and cartographers used many terms to describe the region, including Nova Hispania, America Septentrinale, Louisiana, Messico. A new world, full of challenges, where survival required independence, fortitude and resoluteness. This Exhibit includes original maps from the Yana and Marty Davis Map Collection.

“Livermore Cache” In 1906, Susan Janes made the last of her seven trips to a cache of arrowheads located on Mount Livermore in the Davis Mountains. One hundred years later, these arrowheads, known as the Livermore points, continue to intrigue and confound archeologists. At the pictograph site called Tall Rock Shelter the same type of points have been found.
