The La Frontera Research Initiative for STEM at Sul Ross State University awarded nearly $118,000 in Noyce Scholarships at a ceremony earlier in September.
LFRI is charged with conducting education research and implementation of best teaching and learning practices to improve STEM literacy through culturally responsive teaching and learning with technology.
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program provides funding to institutions of higher education for scholarships, stipends and programmatic support to recruit and prepare STEM majors and professionals to become K-12 teachers.
The following SRSU students were awarded Noyce Scholarships:
Adrian Estrada, $24,000: A mathematics major from El Paso, Lobo football player and member of the Math Club.
Yulissa Fuentes, $11,445: A mathematics major from Carrizo Springs and member of the Math Club.
Rebecca Conchas, $22,517: A mathematics major from Del Rio.
Melody Martinez, $24,000: A mathematics major from Seminole, SRSU basketball player and member of the Math Club.
Madeline Haas: $12,978: A mathematics major from Alpine and member of the Math Club.
Rosario Cordova, $22,845: A mathematics major from Del Rio and a member of the Texas State Teachers Association-Aspiring Educators.
Previous scholarship recipients who are working toward completion of their student teaching were also recognized, including Gisella Rodriguez, Halie Fox, Andrea Rivera, Jose Gloria and John Aguero.
