Sul Ross Mourns Passing of Offensive Coordinator Kevin Canty

Good morning.

It falls to me to report to our Lobo family about important matters or events.  So, with a heavy heart, I share with you that we have lost one of our own.

Coach Kevin Canty, the offensive coordinator for our Lobo football team, passed away yesterday.  He was 37 years old.  Much, much too young to leave us.

In a very short time, Coach Canty had an outsized impact on our football program.  Thanks in part to his guidance, four members of the Lobo offense received All-Conference honors last season.  He was that good.

Those who knew Coach Canty were not surprised by his success.  Coach Canty was himself a phenomenally gifted athlete.  An All-American in college, he put all of himself – his whole being; his entire self and all of his energy – into helping the students he coached.  He used his personal experiences to mentor anyone who wanted to improve their football skills — and their lives.

Coach Canty was not afraid.  He came to work every day.  He knew his presence made a difference; he had unshakeable faith and an unequaled commitment to others.

Today, I honor his commitment to Sul Ross and to all of the Lobo family.  I am particularly grateful for his commitment to our student-athletes.  Be assured that once funeral arrangements are known, I will pass that information on so that we may all express our condolences.

Coach Canty’s loss is all of our loss; it should make all of us ponder the mystery and fragility of life.  It should also make us realize how consideration and simple actions can easily make a difference for others.

All I can do, however, is implore each of you to do all you can to make sure your family, friends, colleagues and co-workers continue to stay safe in what still seems to be an uncertain time.  Do it for those around you.  Do it for Coach Canty.
