The College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences (ALPS) at Sul Ross State University will host 164 4-H and FFA members from across the region on Wednesday, April 2, to compete in five separate Career Development Events (CDEs).
The participants represent 10 different high school FFA chapters and six county 4-H Clubs. The CDEs are facilitated by Sul Ross faculty, Texas AgriLife personnel, students and community volunteers. Events and associated superintendents include Agricultural Products Identification, Travis Bell; Horse Evaluation, Luke Hendryx; Livestock Skill-a-Thon, Travis Bell; Veterinary Science, Dr. Jamie Boyd; and Wildlife & Recreation Management, Dr. Ryan Luna and Travis Bell.
Additionally, students enrolled in the spring 2025 Agricultural Leadership course, taught by Dr. Carl Igo, are providing assistance and coordination for each CDE. Student coordinators include Katlyn Barnett, Madison Deskovich, Hope Heredia, Sterling Inman and James Tinkler. These students have been working throughout the semester with the various event superintendents to secure equipment, materials, animals and volunteers.
This annual event has been hosted for numerous years by SRSU. This will be the first year that the university has partnered with Texas AgriLife Extension to host multiple District 6 4-H events, qualifying 4-H members to then participate in state-level events during the Texas 4-H Roundup held in early June. While the specific contests have varied through the years, Sul Ross has hosted this opportunity for intermediate and secondary students since the 1950’s.
