Pearson Vue: Pearson Vue (TExES, NREMT, GED, Texas Department of Insurance, Texas Real Estate, CompTIA, ES)

The Sul Ross State University Testing Center offers many different certification exams delivered via the testing platform Pearson Vue. Pearson Vue testing is offered every Wednesday and Thursday between 9AM – 2PM except for holidays or school closures. Weekend testing occurs based on demand from the Education Department to accommodate the student teachers of Sul Ross. Weekend testing is not limited to just the TExES exam. Candidates seeking certification in other fields are welcome to register. Weekend testing, when available, runs from 9AM – 2PM on Saturdays.

TExES (Texas Examinations of Educator Standards) sponsored by the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program is a criterion-referenced examination designed to measure a student’s knowledge in relation to an established criterion rather than to the performance of other candidates. NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician) exams evaluate individuals for competence of practitioners for the Emergency Medical Serves at a variety of levels:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
  • Paramedic

Before candidates may register for an exam, they must first:

  • Register with The National Registry and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter
  • Been notified of eligibility to sit for the examination
  • Paid all examination fees to The National Registry

GED or General Educational Development is recognized as an alternative to a traditional high school diploma. The GED covers the four subject areas that an individual must pass to earn their high school equivalency credentials. The GED will assess subject reasoning in:

  • Language Arts
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science

GED exams are administered in English or Spanish by all four subjects that must be completed in one sitting or individually. All GED exams must be registered and paid for through the GED website. GED offers many ways to prepare for the exam by locating a prep center near you, online or in-person tutoring, practice questions and tests or purchasing official GED study guides. Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) regulates the state’s insurance industry, oversees the administration of the Texas worker’s compensation system, performs duties of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and provides administrative support of the Office of Injured Employee Counsel.

Candidates seeking licensure for a career with the Texas Department of Insurance must first register for and pass their exam prior to submitting their application. Applications must be submitted within one year of passing their exam. Renewal of licenses must be done within 90 days prior to the expiration date.

Texas Real Estate exams are developed to assess areas such as product knowledge, terms and concepts. The Texas Real Estate Commission has established the requirements for qualification for a real estate salesperson or broker license. If you have filed an application and met TREC’s qualifications, you have one year from the date the application was filed to pass your examination. A full list of TREC exams can be found here.

Exams are designed to help candidates learn and become acclimated to the ever-changing possibilities of technological advances.

ES or Evaluation Systems offers examinations to assess and prepare for success to fit the criteria for certification of educators within and out of the State of Texas. All Pearson Vue based testing requires candidates to read, agree to and sign the appropriate Candidate Agreement Form upon check-in to the Testing Center. Additionally, the Sul Ross State University Testing Center (as of October 14th, 2025) here on will require Pearson Vue Candidiates to read, agree to and sign our Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology and Medical Device Agreement prior to the administration of the exam.

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) serves as the environmental agency for the state of Texas. Occupational Licensing ensures minimum competency in occupations directly affecting public health and the environment. Please visit the TCEQ website, https://www.tceq.texas.gov/ or call the STEERS support line at 512-239-6133 or 512-239-6525, for information regarding the preparation, requirements, and approvals you must have before taking the Occupational Licensing exam.

Currently, TCEQ computer-based tests are offered at our Alpine, TX testing location only. The Testing Center has moved and is now housed on the 3rd floor of the Briscoe Administration Building (BAB) Room 302.

Testers who do not pass their 1st attempt are welcome to try their 2nd attempt immediately upon completion, if time allows. This may not apply to the 6-hour long exams.

There is a $35.00 fee associated with test administration, which can be collected prior to or on the day of testing. The Testing Center accepts EXACT cash or most credit/debit cards.

A current photo ID will be required upon arrival. It is recommended, but not required, to bring your eligibility approval letter with you to any testing site.

Testers who may need special accommodation such as time extensions or others will need to fill out and submit the special accommodations request form to TCEQ directly. The request form can be found at the bottom of this page. Notes, training materials or copies of rules are approved only for the Municipal Waste Solid (MWS) Class A and Class B exams.

Typically, tests require a score of 80% to pass licensure; all scores are generated immediately upon completion and awarded to the tester. It is recommended that the tester retain a copy of their scores.

TCEQ computer-based tests can be scheduled throughout the year excluding weekends and holidays where office hours may be limited or closed. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) offers four different licensing exams at the Sul Ross State University Testing Center in collaboration with the H. Joaquin Jackson Law Enforcement Academy located in Alpine, TX. Testers seeking licensure or license renewal are responsible for ensuring their eligibility with TCOLE.

TCOLE testers have 3 attempts to pass their exam with a score of at least 70%. Certification must be obtained within 180 days upon academy completion, unless granted an extension.

Scores are generated and released to the tester immediately upon completion and should be retained by the tester for their records.

  • Peace Officer Exam is a 3-hour test consisting of 250 questions. There is a $45.00 fee associated with test administration that is payable to the Testing Center directly by exact cash or credit/debit cards.
  • Peace Officer to Jailor Exam is a 90-minute test consisting of 100 questions. It is advised that testers pay close attention to which exam they are requesting eligibility for, as the PO to Jailor exam is a completely different exam from the Basic PO and Basic Jailor exam. There is a $25.00 test administration fee associated.
  • The Basic Telecommunicator Exam is a 90-minute exam consisting of 80 questions. This is also often referred to as the dispatcher’s exam. There is a $25.00 test administration fee associated.
  • The Basic Jailor Exam is a 1-hour and 45-minute exam consisting of 100 questions. This test is also referred to as the Count Corrections exam. There is a $25.00 test administration fee associated.

Any additional needs, such as accommodation, will need to be requested and submitted through TCOLE. The tester can contact TCOLE directly for more information at 512-936-7700.

Examinees must obtain a PID number (Personal Identification number) before scheduling to test. All exams can be scheduled over the phone with the Testing Center at 432-837-8178 emailing at testing@sulross.edu or through our booking link located by clicking on the Testing Schedule tab on our main page.  All support numbers for additional information can be found on the TCOLE website.

Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)

The Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) aids in the protection of lives and property of Texas citizens through the development and enforcement of recognized professional standards for individuals and the fire service. The Commission’s authority is defined by the Texas Government Code Chapter 419. The TCFP has two major goals within its strategic plan, including:

  • The agency fulfills the first goal by providing education and assistance to the fire service: Fire Protection Resource Library and Injury Report.
  • The second goal of the agency is fulfilled by three program areas by enforcing statewide fire service standards: Certification, Training, and Testing.

We offer TCFP computer-based testing at two locations; our main Campus in Alpine, TX or the Sul Ross State University International Campus in Del Rio, TX. All testing on either campus is required to be booked in advance.

  1. There will be an administration fee which will vary depending on the length of your exam. This fee can be paid prior to your scheduled testing day or upon arrival at your appointment. All fees can be paid by either exact cash or credit/debit card. To pay in advance, please use our online marketplace link here:
  1. On your scheduled test day, please ensure that you bring a printed copy of the approval letter from the TCFP, a current form of photo identification, and a form of payment (only if you have not previously paid the testing fee). Testers will not be allowed to test if they do not provide their printed approval, photo ID, or pay the fee.

Please be advised that the TCFP computer-based tests follow a very strict set of rules to ensure the exams’ integrity. For this reason, you will be asked to remove all hats, hoods, visors, sunglasses, or any other item of clothing (that is not associated with a religious item of clothing) that will restrict the proctor from viewing your face during the exam. These items will either need to stay in your vehicle or stored in a secure locker unit. Regular reading glasses will be inspected prior to test administration.

The use of notes or study guides is prohibited.

All electronic devices (phones, pagers, smartwatches, ear buds, etc.) will need to be powered off and stored with the rest of your belongings.

Exam retakes

TCFP computer-based exams, if not passed on the first attempt, may be retaken on the same day if time and space permits.

Before retesting, examinees must contact the TCFP and request a new exam code. Depending on the length of the exam, an additional administration fee payment may be required prior to retest administration.

It is recommended; however, examinees wait at least one business day prior to retesting. Exam scheduling will be required, in this case.
