The Academic Support Center (ASC), formerly known as TLC, conveniently located on the first floor of the Bryan Wildenthall Memorial Library, is a great resource for academic success. Whether you feel you are falling behind, just can’t quite grasp the concept of a course, or even simply enjoy talking about content to a trained listener (the Socratic method!), the ASC offers skilled tutors who are available to set you onto the path to success.
The tutors at ASC come from a variety of majors: History, Science, Business, English, Math—you name it, and the ASC may have it. Being Sul Ross students, themselves, the tutors possess the distinct advantage of understanding where you are coming from when seeking advice for better study skills. They can really guide you to success in a course.
With Sul Ross’ smaller sized campus, chances are strong that the tutors have taken courses from the same professors as you before and will be able to experientially understand assignments—a major plus.
ASC’s hours of operation coincide with those of the library’s, with an exception of Saturdays, when it is closed. Weekend hours recently have been expanded to include Sundays in order to offer better service to Lobos.
Tutoring is not all the services offered by the ASC. The ASC also offers a wide array of workshops that are open to all students. Academic Enhancement Seminars are hosted at a variety of times throughout the semester. On average, there are one to two different types of workshops during the week. For instance, upcoming seminars for the week of March 2nd through March 4th will feature instruction on sentence structure in college composition. Also, Tuesday, March 3rd from 6-7 p.m., the tutors of ASC will host a workshop on “How to Make Your Essay Flamin’ Hot!”
This editor highly recommends the ASC—it is a great place to work on schoolwork, surrounded by fellow students all pursuing the same things: student success!
