While schools across Texas and the nation have closed their doors due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Sul Ross State University education students are utilizing their proficiencies by assisting parents with educating their children from home.
Students in the SRSU Teacher education program are required to develop lesson plans as part of their preparation to become teachers said Dr. Jeanne Qvarnstrom, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness.
According to Qvarnstrom, the lesson plans must incorporate the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as a foundation. “The TEKS were developed by the Texas Education Agency and outline the learning outcomes that all students should master in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade,” said Qvarnstrom.
“The lesson plans also must have activities for children to do that will help them learn and master the TEKS.”
The lesson plans posted above include video links and activity sheets that are ready for parents to use with their children.
Qvarnstrom added that students in her ED 3301 course (Curriculum and Instruction for Classroom Teachers) designed lesson plans that they were planning to actually teach to children in the local schools during the spring semester.
“With the closing of the schools, our education students wanted to make their lessons available to parents,” she said. “Our goal and hope is that both parents and children will enjoy learning together.”
