The College Level Examination Program is a testing program which enables students to receive course credit by taking an exam. Students can earn up to 30 semester hours of credit by exam.

Prior to enrollment, new students who have not attempted college credit before may submit acceptable scores from a general or subject exam and will receive credit only in those subjects in which they have not earned academic credit. Enrolled students are eligible to take subject examinations only if they have not attempted the course.

Students may not attempt credit by examination for a course in which they have received failing grades or for a basic course in those areas in which they have acceptable college credit for more advanced courses. New students may want to arrange to take the test(s) during orientation or prior to regular registration in order to facilitate their advising and enrollment. Test results are received immediately since the test is on computer except for the Analysis & Interpretation of Literature (ENG 2301), which requires an acceptable essay graded by the SRSU English department.

If a student has withdrawn from a course – has a “W” – and wishes to take a CLEP test for that subject, he or she must present a letter to the Testing Center from their advisor on SRSU letterhead or an email from the advisor authorizing the student to test.

Fees

The total cost for each test is $102, paid in two parts: a fee of $87 pre paid at CLEP college board by signing up and registering for a test. (A ticket voucher is created, please bring to Carrer Services and Testing UC Room 211 to set up a testing date). Also a $15 fee is due on the day of the test to the Career Service & Testing center for test administration. (Can pay with cash, check or money order ONLY).  There is an additional $10 fee when taking the Analysis & Interpretation of Literature (ENG 2301) for the essay component, which is paid to Sul Ross State University.

Restrictions

Scores are sent to the student and to the registrar of each designated school between two and four weeks after the test. CLEP exams may not be retaken for three months. Each test is about 90 minutes in length, and optional essays require an additional time period.

When

CLEP tests will be available throughout the semester. A reservation for a test date may be made by contacting the Office of Career Services and Testing at (432) 837-8178.
