The office of Institutional Effectiveness provides leadership for assessment in both administrative and academic programs for the main campus in Alpine and off-site campuses of the Rio Grande College. Assessment at SRSU is conducted to ensure and provide evidence of continuous improvement.

SRSU utilizes a web-based assessment planning and management system named TracDat, where all program coordinators use an established assessment template.

Academic Assessment

The assessment of educational programs and student learning-outcomes at Sul Ross is the responsibility of the faculty members in each program. Each academic program has developed and implemented and an assessment plan that clearly identifies expected student learning outcomes, assesses how well they achieve these outcomes, and documents their use of results to improve student learning.

SRSU follows an annual assessment model for the submission and review of program assessment reports. Each academic report will include seven components:

  • Statement of Purpose

A statement of the design of the educational program and its mission

  • Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Identification of the knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes that students are expected to demonstrate before completing the program. All are aligned with the University mission and strategic plan. A minimum of three are required.

  • Assessment Methods

The tools used to conduct the assessment, with details about how, when, where the assessment is conducted and who conducts it. A minimum of two for each SLO is required. Grades are not acceptable measures, and surveys should not be used excessively.

  • Targets or Criteria for Success

The student proficiency level for each assessment method, as determined by the program.

  • Assessment of Results and Summary of Findings

A statement of whether the target was met and corresponding supporting data.

  • Use of Results and Action Plans

A critical reflection on the assessment results and an action plan for how to apply the findings from the for program improvement.

  • Annual Update

A discussion of growth and improvements in assessment findings from the previous assessment cycles. The assessment cycle begins in June and ends in May each year, with reviews during the summer. All reports are reviewed in a Peer Review session where deans and faculty across disciplines use a scoring rubric to provide feedback to the program coordinators.


Administrative Assessment

Academic colleges and departments, and non-academic units also conduct annual assessments. Deans serve as assessment coordinators of colleges and Department Chairs serve as coordinators of academic departments.

Similar to academic assessments, outcomes, assessment methods and targets are tracked and evaluated, and documentation is provided for each goal. These assessments are completed and stored in the TracDat System. The Coordinator of Institutional Effectiveness manages the administrative assessment process.


Program Reviews

SRSU follows a seven-year calendar that schedules a program review for all academic programs within the cycle. The respective department chairs, college deans, and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness evaluate all program reviews.

Graduate Program Reviews

The review of graduate programs are mandated by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), and follow the criteria provided in the Chapter 5, Subchapter C, section 5.52 of Coordinating Board rules requiring a self-review and an external reviewer. The Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, Dr. Sharon Hileman (, directs the graduate program review process.

Undergraduate Program Reviews

IE directs and coordinates the undergraduate program review. The undergraduate program review is aligned with the THECB guidelines, but do not require an external reviewer.
